Because its a reliable grind to drown out the real world and they're too lazy to look for anything better. :)

They play it because they are addicted to it. They build these games on social sites to get folks tied to them. As for me I have better things to do than play farmville.
I have an idea instead of running a virtual farm go out and grow some food for yourself.
