Economic tumble worse than expected in 3rd quarter

Ugh. Even *worse* than expected? I have been reading and listening to economists, and they say that a large part of the problem is that people are reacting to the fear of a recession, which actually ends up making the actual economy worse. But how do you expect people to keep putting money into the market or going out to buy things when everyone is afraid of getting laid off in the bad economy?
